The Successful Artist’s Career Guide: Finding Your Way in the Business of Art

Through artist interviews, personal stories, self-reflective worksheets and practical advice, The Successful Artist’s Career Guide is for anyone who has decided to embrace life as a visual artist.

There’s some wonderful art in this book by the artist interviewees: woodcuts, iron work and repousse, graphic novel art, graphic design, fantastically detailed stencils, murals, painting, and more. There’s even an inkblot! The artist interviews are my favorite part: they are challenging, reassuring, funny: it is fascinating and inspiring to see how people came to be doing what they are doing now.

I love your book! Any advice for an older person getting started in art? I’ve taken art lessons for about 3-4 years. I love it! I’m just over 50 now. I do have a website up. I’m taking more art workshops and such. I’d really like to work full time in art. Anyway, thanks for the book.

      Hi Cindy,
You are the perfect age to get something started! The key is–and it is easier said than done–to make a decision about what exactly it is that you WANT to do–what you want from your art making. Do you want to make paintings and sell them? Is there a local community place that shows art? Can you join an art organization? Or are there cooperative galleries that you could join? Making a decision about what you want is step 1–and the rest will sort of shake into place. Good luck!
